March 5, 2006 – First Sunday of Lent
Job 42:1-6, 10-17
(The Message)
Job answered God:
"I'm convinced: You can do
anything and everything.
Nothing and no one can upset your
plans.
You asked, 'Who is this muddying
the water,
ignorantly confusing the issue,
second-guessing my purposes?'
I admit it. I was the one. I
babbled on about things far beyond me,
made small talk about wonders way
over my head.
You told me, 'Listen, and let me
do the talking.
Let me ask the questions. You give
the answers.'
I admit I once lived by rumors of
you;
now I have it all firsthand - from
my own eyes and ears!
I'm sorry - forgive me. I'll never
do that again, I promise!
I'll never again live on crusts of hearsay, crumbs of rumor."
After Job had interceded for his
friends, God restored his fortune - and then doubled it! All his brothers and
sisters and friends came to his house and celebrated. They told him how sorry
they were, and consoled him for all the trouble God had brought him. Each of
them brought generous housewarming gifts.
God blessed Job's later life even
more than his earlier life. He ended up with fourteen thousand sheep, six
thousand camels, one thousand teams of oxen, and one thousand donkeys. He also
had seven sons and three daughters. He named the first daughter Dove, the
second, Cinnamon, and the third, Darkeyes. There was not a woman in that
country as beautiful as Job's daughters. Their father treated them as equals
with their brothers, providing the same inheritance.
Job lived on another hundred and forty years, living to see his children and grandchildren - four generations of them! Then he died - an old man, a full life.
Psalm 34:1-8, 19-22
(The Message)
I bless God every chance I get;
my lungs expand with his praise.
I live and breathe God;
if things aren't going well, hear
this and be happy:
Join me in spreading the news;
together let's get the word out.
God met me more than halfway,
he freed me from my anxious fears.
Look at him; give him your warmest
smile.
Never hide your feelings from him.
When I was desperate, I called
out,
and God got me out of a tight
spot.
God's angel sets up a circle of
protection around us while we pray.
Open your mouth and taste, open
your eyes and see - how good God is.
Blessed are you who run to him.
Disciples so often get into
trouble;
still, God is there every time.
He's your bodyguard, shielding
every bone;
not even a finger gets broken.
The wicked commit slow suicide;
they waste their lives hating the
good.
God pays for each slave's freedom;
no one who runs to him loses out.
Hebrews 7:23-28 (The
Message)
Earlier there were a lot of
priests, for they died and had to be replaced. But Jesus' priesthood is
permanent. He's there from now to eternity to save everyone who comes to God
through him, always on the job to speak up for them.
So now we have a high priest who perfectly fits our needs: completely holy, uncompromised by sin, with authority extending as high as God's presence in heaven itself. Unlike the other high priests, he doesn't have to offer sacrifices for his own sins every day before he can get around to us and our sins. He's done it, once and for all: offered up himself as the sacrifice. The law appoints as high priests men who are never able to get the job done right. But this intervening command of God, which came later, appoints the Son, who is absolutely, eternally perfect.
Mark 10:46-52 (The
Message)
They spent some time in Jericho.
As Jesus was leaving town, trailed by his disciples and a parade of people, a
blind beggar by the name of Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus, was sitting alongside
the road. When he heard that Jesus the Nazarene was passing by, he began to cry
out, "Son of David, Jesus! Mercy, have mercy on me!" Many tried to
hush him up, but he yelled all the louder, "Son of David! Mercy, have
mercy on me!"
Jesus stopped in his tracks.
"Call him over."
They called him. "It’s your
lucky day! Get up! He’s calling you to come!"
Throwing off his coat, he was on
his feet at once and came to Jesus.
Jesus said, "What can I do
for you?"
The blind man said, "Rabbi, I
want to see."
"On your way," said
Jesus. "Your faith has saved and healed you."
In that very instant he recovered his sight and followed Jesus down the road.
