History of the United Covenant Church of Wilton

United Covenant Church of Wilton

In 1889, within a period of eight months, two small churches were founded in Georgetown and East Norwalk, CT, as groups of Swedish settlers felt the need for worship and fellowship in their own language. As time went by, both churches lost much of their ethnicity, welcoming worshippers of various backgrounds.

As membership of the two congregations continued to be few in number, a merger was effected by the two churches in October 1975, after much prayerful discussion. The United Covenant Church of Wilton was born. Plans to build a church met many setbacks, and for several years worship services were held at Wilton Library. In 1981, under the leadership of the Reverend Gordon B. Miller, who had been called as a developer/pastor, plans were revived to build a church home on land that the church owned on Westport Road in Wilton.

Enthusiasm rose steadily among the church family, as they volunteered their evenings and Saturdays to work on various aspects of the building project. Many in our church family gave memorial gifts in honor of loved ones; many others not affiliated with our church gave generously to aid our work; everyone contributed in one way or another. In all these events, God's leading was very evident, and we looked forward to the day when we could move into our new building.

That day came on September 9, 1984, when a service of dedication was held in our new church, with thanksgiving to the Lord for the completion of this milestone in the life of our church. However, we are all cognizant of the fact that the church is not the building--it is the people who come to worship, serve, and fellowship together here.

United Covenant Church of Wilton welcomes all visitors and all newcomers to our area to worship and fellowship with us as part of our church family.
