Words of Welcome From Our Pastor
Welcome to our web site and welcome to our congregation! In today's busy world, where people schedule their lives in minute ways and we often look back through a year and wonder "Where did it go?" we welcome you to set aside some time to grow in Christian faith and love for our Lord Jesus Christ. At United Covenant Church we are committed to welcoming people of all ages and walks of life into Christian fellowship for worship, service and fun. As Jesus spoke to his disciples in the upper room, he said to them, "I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father" (John 15:15). Gregory of Nyssa, a fourth century Christian writer once said, ". . . we consider becoming God's friend as the only thing worthy of honor or desire." One of the songs treasured by early Covenantors is called "With God as Our Friend" by a Swedish hymn writer named Carl Olof Rosenius. The song talks about the various ways the people of the church experience God's friendship. We experience friendship with God and one another in the sacraments, in fellowship around a dinner table, through working to achieve commonly held goals, by participating in worship and by committing ourselves, as a community and as individuals, to grow in our awareness of God's presence in all of life. How will you experience friendship with God and with others at United Covenant Church? Well, we are a small community. As a result, we tend to do things together. "Intergenerational" would be a good word to describe our worship and community events. We do have times set aside for age-specific activities, but the greater part of our time is spent in community. In a world that seems to want to separate adults and children, elders and youth, singles and married couples, we believe that the Christian faith is best manifest by bringing people together in Christian love and unity. Your child might find that his or her best friend in our congregation is an elderly person who finished raising a family many years ago. Or you might find that a high school student said something in Sunday School that kept you thinking and praying throughout the week. This also presents some challenges as we learn to listen to and even appreciate different types of music, prayers and ways of looking at the world. We know it's a rare way of doing things, but we have discovered rich blessings through living out our faith in this way. We hope you will too. As you browse through our web site we hope you will consider joining us for worship some Sunday. Come join us and explore with us the exciting life of friendship with God!
